Woody herb, 2-4 m tall.
Flower:
The inflorescence is a terminal yellow spike. Every flower is subtended by green bracts arranged in a linear form.

Leaves:
The leaves are simple and opposite with a crenulated margin. They have a lanceolate form. The largest leaves can be as long as 22 cm. The petiole is flattend on the upper side.

Bark and wood:
The bark is light brown and smooth. The wood is soft and cream colored.
Similar species:
This species can be confused with Aphelandra scabra, but the is red.
