| Site description: | Observation of secondary volcanic activity, mud and fumaroles, hot springs, mud puddles. | Steep slopes when ascending to the crater, at the beginning inside forest and then over old lava flows. Very strong winds, specially in the dry season (January-May) and poor visibility in the wet season. | Trail within forests in irregular areas. |
| Regulations: | You need to carry your own water since the water in rivers can have chemicals from the volcano, do not use any soaps or champu. Do not cross the existing fences since the high temperatures can cause serious burns. If it has rained cross the rivers carefully, being aware of water level and dirtiness. Personal belongings have to be protected against animals in the camping area. | You must inform the personnel in the sector before leaving, it should be done with a guide. Other trails:
Cataratas escondidas: Trail for general public which leads to waterfalls where you can swim. This trail goes through rain forest and has a total disctance of 4.5 km. Duration is 1 hour and 45 minutes. This trail starts northeast of the house.
La Cangreja: This is a 2 km detour on the trail leading cataratas escondidas.
From Liberia take the Interamerican highway until
you find the road to Curubandé.Follow this road until arriving at
Las Pailas. You can get here in private vehicle, or by bus to Curubandé
and then walking (10 km).
